Christmas songs can be rich and inspirational, lifting our spirits and setting our souls to flight. The pace and theology of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” are triumphant and profound. The lines and strains of “O Holy Night” are moving and motivational. The message and melody of “Silent Night” are tender and touching. From traditional hymns and carols to holiday choirs and ensembles, few things capture the essence of Christmas like its repertoire of beautiful music.
In this year’s Advent series, we will examine the original “songs” shared that first Christmas as recorded in Luke’s Gospel. We will explore the Old Testament foundations of these prophetic songs composed by those who had a front row seat to “the dawn of redeeming grace.” When Jesus came into the world, ordinary folks sang from the depths of their heart. The church today continues their song.
